Week Zero

Step 2.

(a) This is one of my design project in Foundation studies last year, it aims to explore the use of materials in order to create a pencil holder. The materials I used are door locks made by stainless steel with black and white. What I found really interesting and inspire me from this project is that design do not have limitation which anything, any materials in everyday life are possible to  create  a design/ product. As a design student,  it is important that have the ability to seek the aesthetics from life and nature.

(b) This is Shanghai Tower which was designed by the American architectural firm Gensler, with Chinese architect Jun Xia leading the design team. It is world's second tallest building and was completed by 2014. The tower takes the from of nine cylindrical buildings stacked atop each other, totalling 127 floors, and it all enclosed by the inner layer of the glass facde.  What really interesting about Shanghai Tower is that the unique design feature of transparent of the facde which most buildings have only a single façade using highly reflective glass to reduce heat absorption, but the Shanghai Tower's double layer of glass eliminates eliminates the need for either layer to be opaqued. The double-layered insulating glass façade was designed to reduce the need for indoor air conditioning and is composed of an advanced reinforced glass with a high tolerance for temperature variations. In addition, the design of the tower's glass façade, which completes a 120° twist as it rises, is intended to reduce wind loads on the building by 24% which can reduced the amount of construction materials needed. Also, the Shanghai Tower used 25% less structural steel than a conventional design of a similar height. As a result, the building's constructors saved an estimated US$58 million in material costs.

(c)The view shown in the image is Whitehaven Beach and located in the Great Barrier Reef , it is one of the most beautiful beach in Australia even in the world. Whitehaven Beach is known for its white sands. It has a beautiful scenery and the sand consists of 98% pure silica which gives it a bright white color. Local rocks do not contain silica so it has been suggested that the sands were brought to the beach via prevailing sea currents over millions of years. Also, Unlike regular sand, the sand on Whitehaven Beach does not retain heat making which is  comfortable to walk barefoot on a hot day.
